Directional Boring

Directional Boring, also referred to as HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) is the method of installing conduits and cable by creating shallow, trenchless underground pathways.

Boring offers significant environmental advantages as compared to its equivalent counterpart methods, such as cut and cover utility/pipe installation.

Equipment

As with any infrastructure job, the right tools and equipment are necessary for proper installation. The starting ones that are used include tractor trailer mounted drills, excavators, drilling fluid reclaimers, high volume pumps, and others. Smaller bores usually have smaller and more portable equipment with less thrust/push force.

Technique

The use of HDD is extensive, and there's no wondering why. This method is more cost-effective, sustainable, and less disruptive to roadways/ traffic and surrounding environments than cut & cover methods. Operators are given adequate information about the surrounding utilities before breaking ground to avoid damaging utilities.

Locating & Guidance

There are multiple means of locating and guiding the drill head, some of which are walk-over locating systems (using transmitters and sondes behind the bore head), wire-line locating systems (magnetic guidance), gyro-based locating systems (fully autonomous and most accurate when the sufficient diameter is available), among others.

AND SO MUCH MORE.
