Fiber Optic Cable Splicing

The process of splicing or resplicing fiber optic cable and copper cable by joining two or more conductors together for a permanent mechanical bond.

Methods

For both cable types the process is fundamentally similar. It is done by removing the outer cable sheath, splicing blinder groups in order, and restoring cable integrity by adding a closure to the splice point.

Types

There are 2 types of splicing, mechanical and fusion.

Mechanical splicing includes taking a junction of two or more optical fibers and using a small mechanical splice, to join the fibers together.

Fusion uses a specialized fusion splicer machine to precisely align the two fiber ends. The glass ends are then fused/welded together to form a permanent bond. This method is more expensive but results in less light transmission loss.
